"Vestiges of Grandeur"

Continuing on the theme of the South, some beautiful images of homes which have seen better days. And yet, in my opinion, although these homes are no longer habitable, they are perhaps more beautiful in this grand state of decay than they once were in their finest...

Oh man, these take me back. I bought this book ages ago when it first came out. And then the others in the "series." I sold them when we moved over here, and not a day has passed that I haven't regretted that bonehead idea.

It's out of print now, but I'm most definitely going to pick up a used copy when we return. And the others as well.

Sexton's photographs are so rich and immediate you can almost smell the rot.

Love, love, LOVE his work!

Damn, I wish I'd known...the place where we vacation every summer has a little interiors shop/wine bar that I love to peruse {preferably with a glass of wine in hand}, anywho, they were going out of business this summer when we were there and were selling a stack of signed copies, 60% off. Of course I picked one up and had I known, I would have saved one for my NZ pal! :0(

Here's hoping they start showing up on Amazon used*.

Here are the others in the series and I apologize in advance for the long links:

"Gardens of New Orleans: Exquisite Excess"

New Orleans: Elegance and Decadence":

*Whoops! I had it wrong. It's these two that are out of print. "Vestiges" is still available new. I cannot recommend the latter one enough. Just one of the absolute best photography books on New Orleans ever.

How could I, holder of an MFA in photography, not have seen these?!

Stunned by my ignorance, and the gorgeousness.
